Beaches of Carriacou

White island is a non inhabited island at two miles distance from the southern coast of Carriacou , opposite Cassada Bay. Other islands next to White Island are Saline Island and Frigate Island. White Island is a marine park because of its virgin reefs, and shoals of exotic tropical fish. The island has one predominant rock which can be seen from far away. It can be climbed by the adventurous, but bring some good shoes, and ability because there is no path up.
The sand of White Island is speckled with pink flints of Lambi (Conch) shells, and hence is a bit more course then beaches like Paradise Beach or Anse La Roche beach. The advantage is that it does not stick to your body as the finer sand does.
There is vegetation on White Island, but no large trees apart from a few palms in the center. Shrubs are mainly Seagrapes, and they provide for the essential shade.
A favorite for many to do here is spearfishing and snorkling, and later on grill the catch on a small barbeque. There are a few spots where you can see that others have used it to make a small fire, so thats the best place to do the same.
Please take all your waste with you back to shore. You will notice that most others have done the same. Even though this is a often visited island it still stays unspoilt by the visitors. There's only one way to get to White Island, and that is by boat. Get a water taxi from any place on Carriacou. Normally you would arrange for a time to be picked up again, otherwise you will have to pay the taxi driver for the waiting time. Some taxi drivers don't mind the waiting and try to catch some fish in the meantime.
Note : bring sufficient drinks and some food and some other essentials like sunblock with a high factor. There is no bar here, no public toilets neither. (maybe something for the board of tourism to do on the beaches of Carriacou? ) Many people get a sunburn on their backs here during the snorkling. Beware of sunburn, because the white sand and sea reflect a lot of rays! Diving and Snorkeling at White Island
Reefs
.JPG) Around White Island there is no need of bottles. There is some fantastic snorkeling to be done here. Waters are extremely clear and shallow. On all sides of the island the water is teeming with life. Without going into the water I could see a fairly large Barracuda between the rocks. Without even wetting my feet...
