Blending the elegance and charm of an English country house with the tropical climate, beautiful palm tree shaded beach and lush vegetation, this wildly romantic hideaway offers a wonderful opportunity for recreation, relaxation, nature appreciation and the ambiance in which to enjoy it.
La Sagesse Nature Centre is a 12 room hotel and restaurant situated on a half-mile of sandy tree-shaded beach on the southeast coast of Grenada. La Sagesse Beach It is a wildly romantic hideaway that offers fascinating opportunities for recreation, relaxation, nature appreciation and the serenity in which to enjoy it. Our restaurant is famous for its fresh seafood and use of fresh locally grown fruits and vegetables.
The main house of La Sagesse Nature Centre looks very much like one of the grand estate houses elsewhere on the island. It is younger than the old plantation houses, but its history is no less checkered.
It was built in the 1960s by Lord Brownlow, one of the British aristocracy and cousin of Queen Elizabeth II, as his piedà-terre in Grenada. He already owned other properties in the Caribbean, notably in Jamaica and St. Lucia. His visits were few and far between, echoing the behavior of absentee landlords of West Indian estates in the previous two centuries. Though he expected his privacy to be respected, he nonetheless installed gates at his property line and refused local people access across his land to the beautiful La Sagesse Bay.
When the Peoples’ Revolution came about in 1979, it began at these gates. A mob stormed through and ransacked the house. It later became a temporary barracks for the Peoples’ Army. Lord Brownlow made no efforts to recover his property and the house started to go to ruin.
In the late 1980s American art history specialist, Mike Meranski, was touring Grenada by motorbike and found La Sagesse and a new vocation at the same time. After negotiations, he became the new owner, restaurateur, hotelier and keeper of the La Sagesse Nature Centre.
The most striking feature of the La Sagesse Nature Center house is the external staircase leading to Mike’s personal apartment. It flows from the upper floor, a cascade in pink stone, like a lolling tongue. Many artists have tried to capture the look and feel of La Sagesse on canvas. These paintings are dotted around the main buildings of this delightful place.
Presently the Nature Center consists of four buildings: The old manor house, once the graceful estate home of the La Sagesse plantation, was completed in 1968 by the infamous Lord Brownlow. It houses the owner's/manager's residence and five large guest rooms which still retain their original grandeur. The new building, completed in Dec. 02, contains three Oceanfront rooms, including one suite, all with private ocean view verandahs, and two ocean view duplex suites . The cottage consists of 2 individually rented rooms with wrap around ocean view verandah The new beachside, open-air restaurant/bar, completed in Dec. 02, is set amongst tropical gardens. It features intimate dining alongside the natural beauty of La Sagesse Bay.

"It's a self-contained patch of serenity, with an open-air bar-restaurant serving superb fresh fish and fruit smoothies, a quiet beach that draws only a few residents of nearby villages, and hiking trails that lead across headlands to adjacent snorkelling beaches.
At one end of La Sagesse Beach is a salt pond fringed with mangroves, and a river outlet cools the water of the cove. At night you feel as if the waves are breaking at the foot of your bed. In the morning you realise it's true" - Outside Magazine
